Sometimes, a staycation is absolutely necessary. Some people feel it doesn’t make sense to book a hotel in your home country, but I’m all for it simply because there are times where you just want to get away from everything that is familiar to you. From Studio M, Hotel 1929, The Westin Singapore and Capella Singapore, W Singapore Sentosa Cove was the latest that the boyfriend and I checked in to – for a pre-birthday staycation (yes I’m turning 28 in a week!).

This time we wanted to get far away from all the hustle and bustle of our cosmopolitan city, so we chose Sentosa. However, W Singapore Sentosa Cove was more crowded than we expected (probably due to the long weekend with a public holiday on Monday) so we didn’t quite get the quiet we were hoping for. Fortunately, the AWAY Room that we stayed in gave us the privacy that we wanted from the rest of the hotel guests.

The entrance to the AWAY Room is so discreet that we couldn’t find it on our own – you need to access this separate section through a glass door that is next to the hotel’s AWAY Spa on Level 1. Greeted by the soft ambient lighting of the 41-square-metre room, our moods were instantly calmed as we plopped ourselves onto the king-sized bed.

Draw the curtains open and the room filled up with natural daylight through the sliding glass door which opens up to the terrace where we had our own plunge pool concealed by hedges. Within the toilet, there is a rainforest shower and a separate bathtub that directly leads to the pool. Of course, you can bring the blinds down if you wish to soak in the bathtub in privacy.

Beside the 40-inch LED HDTV with Bose surround sound system, there is a 21-inch Ad Notam LED TV in the bathroom mirror and another LED TV where the bathtub is. The workstation is good for one person and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. The connection was a little laggy, but at least the Wi-Fi is the same for all parts of the hotel, so I didn’t have to log into a different Wi-Fi network for the lobby or the dining areas.

FIT, the hotel’s fitness centre, is pretty decent, with lots of machines to cater to people of different needs. I don’t train with machines, so I was really happy to see the racks of free weights. Best of all – it is open 24 hours every day so you can squeeze your workout in any time of the day whenever you feel like it or whenever your schedule permits. There is also a fitness programme called FIT with Tara Stiles, famous American model-turned-yoga-instructor, where you can get your exercise no matter how busy you are, via the in-room workout video or little exercise tips on cards found in the room.

Breakfast was at The Kitchen Table and I thought it was a little cramped as walking space was pretty limited, in part due to the crowded weekend too. Food choice was varied, including Western, Chinese and an egg station for the omelette of your choice. Dining options around the hotel would be at Quayside Isle Sentosa Cove where there are many types of cuisine to choose from. It was really crowded the night we were there, thus we went with in-room dining instead – which was pretty awesome.

W Singapore lives up to its name as a top luxury hotel, as evident from its full occupancy. I would recommend going on a weekday perhaps, when it’s less busy and crowded.
