It’s not a good time to be in Jeju Island now, with the ferry tragedy, so I apologise in advance if my posts on my Jeju trip are insensitive to you. On assignment for Wheels Asia magazine – courtesy of Korea Tourism Organisation (Singapore), Jeju Tourism Organization and Automobile Association of Singapore – I am here on Jeju Island for a self-drive holiday.
Self-drive? Meaning we are given a car and we will drive ourselves (in a convoy) to all the attractions, instead of being hustled around in a tour bus. I do like renting cars and touring countries at my own pace, but that means having to take time to plan the itinerary and stuff. This self-drive holiday is basically a guided tour, just that you drive yourself and get to experience overseas road culture.
Jeju Island, off the southern coast of South Korea, is a popular vacation spot for Koreans and foreigners, and is especially popular for weddings and honeymoons. The island offers visitors a wide range of activities: hiking on Halla-san (South Korea’s highest peak) or Olle-gil (routes), catching sunrises and sunsets over the ocean, riding horses, touring all the sites you see in K-drama, or visiting the various museums (they have one for Health and Sex). Hello Kitty Land opened in Jeju last December, but unfortunately it’s not part of my itinerary this trip!
I will have three full days in Jeju, in the company of bloggers Bryan of TheSmartLocal.com and fashionista Drea Chong.
You can say we sorta ‘crashed’ this tour organised by the Automobile Association of Singapore (AAS), which 12 of them signed up for. Thank you AAS for letting us join you guys on this tour!
I was initially worried about the weather and lugged my winter wear along. It has been about 13 degrees Celsius with chilly winds, but my triple layer (including a NatGeo windbreaker) is doing an awesome job of keeping me warm. For once, I’m not the one complaining about being cold. I am terrible in cold weather, but not this time!
