Fitness First cracks motivation code on exercise

Fitness First in Singapore announced the transformation of its fitness philosophy, customer service, and gyms, all of which are being re-designed around the principles of behavioural psychology. This comes as new research challenges the myth of what motivates us to exercise.

Conducted on the back of its new global brand rollout, Fitness First unveiled insights from a nationwide survey in Singapore, which found that sheer willpower alone is not enough to get people here to maintain an exercise habit.

Key findings from the survey include:

  • Almost 1 in 2 said they avoided exercise because they were not confident on how to do it.
  • Top extrinsic factors that motivate people to get started on exercise are the need to lose weight (39%), improve one’s health after a health scare (23%), and the knowledge of exercise benefits (13%).
  • The drive to exercise is not solely pegged to aesthetic (39%) or health (53%) reasons, but also the need to build confidence to go further in life – with almost 1 in 3 responding so.
  • While 44% attributed their top-motivating factor to personal willpower, it is not the only reason people remain active. Almost 1 in 4 Singaporeans noted the ability to see signs of progress as an important influence.

To help Singapore residents get started on their commitment to fitness and exercise, Fitness First will be launching its inaugural ‘Move It’ campaign, an open house for the public to try out Fitness First’s new classes on the following dates:

  • For members only: 26 May – 1 June
  • For the public: 2 June – 8 June
